Passport:

The Government of Nepal started issuing Machine Readable Passport (MRP) from December 26, 2010. The non-Machine Readable Passport will, therefore, not be issued by the Embassy hereinafter.

Nepal's non-machine readable passports, issued before December 26, 2010, which is currently in circulation, shall remain valid up to the date of expiry as indicated in the passport. Passport holders having their valid passport, therefore, are requested to apply for a fresh Passport (MRP) six months before the expiry of the passport they are presently holding. In case of accidental damage/loss of the passport or use of all the pages meant for visa, one could apply for a new passport any time.

Currently, the Government has centralized, at the Central Passport Office in Kathmandu, responsibilities for issuing the Machine Readable Passport (MRP). It is said that issuing an MRP takes 6-8 weeks from the date of its application. The Embassy will collect applications for MRPs and send periodically to the Central Passport Office in Kathmandu and distribute to the applicants once it receives from Kathmandu. In view of such a lengthy process to be followed, it may take 12- 14 weeks for an applicant, who applies for MRP through this Embassy, to get a new passport.
